Delhi couple sent to judicial custody over racial slurs

A Delhi court has sent a married couple to 14-day judicial custody after they were accused of using racial slurs against their neighbours from the Northeast. The accused, identified as Ruby Jain and her husband Harsh, were produced before Magistrate Bhanu Pratap Singh on Wednesday.

The court remanded the couple to judicial custody till March 11. Their arrest came after an FIR was registered at Malviya Nagar Police Station in south Delhi. The case has drawn attention to concerns over racial discrimination faced by people from the Northeast in metro cities.

What the police said

According to Delhi Police, the incident took place on February 20 during a dispute related to repair work at a rented accommodation in Malviya Nagar. Police said Ruby Jain allegedly used abusive and derogatory language against three women from Arunachal Pradesh.

Following the complaint, police began an investigation and later arrested the couple. Officials said the matter was treated seriously because the alleged remarks targeted the victims’ identity and background.

Charges invoked

The FIR includes provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita such as criminal intimidation, insulting the modesty of a woman, and promoting enmity between different groups. Police also invoked the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act against the woman accused.

Authorities said further investigation is underway. The case once again highlights the need for strict action in incidents involving racial abuse and harassment in the national capital.
